What is
an E-Commerce site?
Simply put, an E-commerce or Online ordering web site is a virtual storefront
as opposed to a "Brick and Mortar" Retail store. However, there
are many similarities to the two type of stores. An E-Commerce storefront
consists of 3 basic parts; the web site, the ordering system, and the
bank processing. A "Brick and Mortar" Retail store consists
of 3 parts as well; the store, the sales people/order takers, and the
bank processing terminal. Within the bank processing for both types, you
have a Merchant Bank processing account that processes and captures the
funds from credit card purchases plus your Business bank account where
the funds will be deposited. [ back to top ]

What can
I do to protect myself from fraud?
There are several things a merchant can do to protect from fraudulent
orders. You should always look at the customer's information and the authorization
message. Each order should contain an approval code plus the words "AVS
Match". AVS (Address Verification Service) is a system where by the
customer's billing address on the order is compared to the billing address
for their credit card. If the billing addresses match, you will receive
"AVS Match" after your approval code. If you receive any other
message (ex. AVS zip) or no AVS message, we recommend you contact the
customer before shipping the product outit may be a fraudulent order.
Additionally, you may want to contact a customer if the item is shipped
out of the US, if the order amount is unusually high, or if any other
questionable information is given. A simple phone call may protect your
business and save you money. [ back to top ]

If I know
that an order is fraudulent, should I void the sale or wait for the
cardholder
to do a chargeback?
If you decide a sale is fraudulent even though it has an approval number,
and you've decided not to ship the product, it is best to Void the sale
before your Batch closes. It's important to avoid chargebacks when possible,
as excessive numbers of chargebacks not only cost you money ($15 - $25
per occurance) but they can harm your Business relationship with the credit
card companies. [
